To the fishermen’s disappointment, William Rolf, senior fisher officer of the United Nations’ (UN) Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had rejected the request of the group Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) to probe the impending dredging of the largest freshwater lake in the Philippines, the Laguna de Bai.
“Within the first 100 days of P-noy (Pres. Aquino’s alias given by the media) in the Palace, significant numbers of demolition incidents and dislocation of urban poor families occurred. Instead of establishing a government that is building lives and communities, it seems that the Aquino administration is serving as vehicle to further destruct and destroy the pillars of our society,” says urban poor leader Joy Lumawod of the Tondo Foreshoreland People’s Alliance in a statement.
