Investigate rape incidents in Saudi—Migrante

MANILA, October 5, 2010—Migrant rights’ watchdog, Migrante-Middle East has urgd the government to investigate the cases of five (5) Filipina nurses, who were allegedly abducted and gang raped in Saudi Arabia.

In an email, John Leonard Monterona, regional coordinator of Migrante-ME said, they have received a two separate reports the Kapatiran sa Gitnang Silangan (KGS), an allied organization of Migrante-ME saying that there were five Filipinas abducted and raped by unidentified men.

“It was KGS chair, Eric Jocson who told us that a Filipina working in Riyadh Kharj Hospital, who was kidnapped, raped and beaten to death. Our initial investigation about the case revealed that the Filipina nurse was on her way home, when the taxi she was riding was stopped by unknown men and pulled her out of the car. The following day, the Pinay nurse was found in the desert, immediately rushed to the RKH, however, with 50 percent rate of survival. After two weeks in the hospital, she died,” Monterona said in his email.

The second abduction-and-rape case involves three (3) Pinay nurses working at National Guard Hospital, also in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

“Based on the testimonies of the witness, they (the three Pinay nurses) were walking from their apartment to nearby department store to buy something when all of the sudden, a car had stopped behind them, and the people inside the car had forced them to get in. Days later, they were all found in a secluded area in Riyadh. When medically examined, the doctors found out that they were raped as lacerations are found in their genitals,” the migrant leader added.

KGS and Migrante-ME are calling on Philippine Embassy Officials in Saudi to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the perpetrators are caught and prosecuted. (Noel Sales Barcelona)
