Kabataan stages noise barrage

MANILA, Philippines—Kabataan partylist and allied organizations kicked off last April 9 the Youth Watch Fridays, a series of weekly noise barrages to protest any attempt by organizations to compel the 2010 elections to fail, thus ensuring the present administration to continue.

In a statement sent to media, Kabataan partylist secretary-general Vencer Crisostomo said, this is their way of telling their fellow youth that despite the implementation of the automated election system (AES), there is still a need for vigilance.

The 24-year old youth leader said as the country is being plagued by AES irregularities, poll-related violence and other anomalies that are yet to be resolved, these situations can be used by the incumbent administration to declare a failure of elections, thus retaining Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as the country’s president.

“The failure of elections in at least 10% of areas in the country may lead to a “no-proclamation scenario. And, in that event, a hold-over government or a military junta may take place. Only proponents of a Gloria-forever plot will benefit from these. It is no secret who controls the military,” he explained, referring to Mrs. Arroyo herself.

Youth Watch Fridays will continue until May 7, or three days before the actual casting of votes, while a nationwide Youth March for clean and honest elections is set on April 20. (Dateline Philippines)
