Mideast OFWs grieve for Aquino

MANILA, Philippines — An alliance of overseas Filipino workers’ (OFW) organizations based in the Middle East joined the mourning for former president Corazon C. Aquino, who died early Saturday morning at the age of 76.

“Kaisa ng sambayanang Pilipino, kaming mga OFWs, ay nakikidalamhati sa pagpanaw ng dating Pangulong Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino, at kinikilala ang kanyang ambag sa pagkakamit ng kalayaan ng sambayanan mula sa ilalim ng diktadurya ng rehimeng Marcos (Together with the Filipino nation, we OFWs mourn the passing of former president Corazon ‘Cory’ Aquino and recognize her role in liberating the nation from the Marcos dictatorial regime),” John Leonard Monterona, Migrante Middle East regional coordinator, said in a statement.

“Ang OFWs ay magiging mapagbantay sa anumang balakin ng kasalukuyang administrasyon na yurakan ang karapatan at kasarinlan ipinaglaban ni Gng. Cory Aquino (The OFWs will continue to be vigilant against any plans of the present regime to trample on the rights and freedoms that Mrs. Cory Aquino fought hard for),” he added.

Migrante Al-Khobar spokesperson Gerry De Guzman, a former political detainee, said he was grateful to Aquino.

“Salamat Gng. Cory Aquino sa iyong kontribusyon para mapalaya kaming lahat na mga bilanggong pulitikal noong panahon ng diktadurang rehimeng Marcos. Salamat Cory, sa iyong kontribusyon at partisipasyon upang mapatalsik ang diktadurang rehimeng Marcos, at pagbuwag at pag lansag sa mga mapaniil at anti-demokratikong batas militar ng diktadurang Marcos. Subalit itutuloy namin ang pakikibaka para sa Bayan (Thank you, Mrs. Aquino, for your contribution to freeing all the political prisoners under the dictatorial regime of Marcos. Thank you Cory for your contribution to and participation in the ouster of the dictatorial regime and the dismantling and destruction of the repressive and anti-democratic martial rule of Marcos. We will continue to struggle for our country),” he said. (Dateline Philippines)
